On Friday, November 9, 2012 Bishop Justin Welby was named the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury. He will succeed Archbishop Rowan Williams as the leader of the Church of England and the spiritual head of 77 million Anglicans worldwide. Archbishop Williams is retiring after a decade in the position.
Bishop Welby studied law and history at Cambridge University and worked in the oil sector before preparing for the priesthood in the late 1980s. Most recently he served as the Bishop of Durham. He will be enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury in March 2013.
