With great sorrow, the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Canada learned of the passing of His Beatitude Ignatius IV, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, who entered eternal rest on Wednesday, December 5, in Beirut, Lebanon. He was 92.
A native of Syria, Patriarch Ignatius IV studied at the American University of Beirut, and at the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. He became the leader of the Antiochian Church in 1979, and was known for his efforts to bolster youth involvement in church life and for spearheading educational opportunities for young people.
