On Wednesday, September 12, 2012 a Canadian-Armenian delegation led by His Eminence Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, Primate met with the Ambassador of Hungary to Canada His Excellency Dr. Laszlo Pordany.

Representatives from Armenian General Benevolent Union (Chahe Tanachian), Armenian National Committee of Canada (Garine Hovsepian, Roupen Kouyumdjian) and the Government Relations Office of the Diocese (Dn. Hagop Arslanian) participated in this meeting.

On behalf of the Canadian-Armenian community, the delegation expressed its great dismay and condemnation for the release of the Azeri criminal Ramil Safarov by the Hungarian authorities. Safarov, is a convicted criminal who murdered an innocent Armenian soldier, Gourgen Margaryan, during a NATO language training course where both men were in attendance.  The brutal attack, at a prestigious military location in Hungary was in itself an inconceivable occurrence. This unprovoked act of savagery was a great shock to the Armenian military and the Armenian people. The release of Safarov from prison and his full pardon is unconscionable.  Furthermore, the autocratic decision of the Azerbaijani President and his attempts to  obliterate the occurrence, gravity and the significance of this hideous crime is utterly inhumane.

During this meeting, the Armenian delegation asked the Ambassador to request from the Government of Hungary to officially condemn the pardon and the glorification of the murderer, and pursue this matter for breaching international laws and moral principles through the International Courts and European Union. In light of this intolerable development, the delegation urged the Government of Hungary, as the only just recuperation, to recognize the independence of the Republic of Nagorno Karabagh.

Ambassador Pordany promised to deliver the message of the Canadian-Armenian delegation to the attention of the Government of Hungary.
