Officials in Armenia announced this week that a collection of Aram Khachaturian’s original sheet music—including music for “Masquerade Suite” and the ballets “Gayane” and “Spartacus”—will be included in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World Register,” a program that will help preserve the archival material.
The collection also includes recordings of music Khachaturian composed for ArmenFilm and MosFilm productions. Among these is the film score for the beloved Armenian movie “Pepo.”
UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register program facilitates the preservation of historic materials by providing training and securing sponsors for select projects. The program also seeks to raise awareness of archival materials through community and media outreach efforts.
The Armenian composer was previously honored by UNESCO in 2003, when the organization declared it the “Year of Aram Khachaturian.”
